Jennifer Van Pelt, MA

Jennifer E. Van Pelt, MA, is a Senior Research Analyst and Senior Hospital Consultant for Hayes, Inc. She is responsible for researching and tracking overall health technology trends and the impact of new and emerging medical technologies for the Hayes horizon scanning service. Ms. Van Pelt also creates and delivers educational seminars on horizon scanning methodology and emerging technology trends, and works on custom research and consulting projects for Hayes hospital clients.

Ms. Van Pelt has almost 20 years of experience in health technology assessment, horizon scanning, hospital/health system consulting, and medical writing. Prior to working for Hayes, Inc., she managed a health technology forecasting service and worked as a hospital consultant for a large nonprofit healthcare research and patient safety organization. As a consultant, Ms. Van Pelt has conducted strategic technology planning, medical equipment/facilities planning, and departmental productivity studies in hospitals and health systems, both in the United States and internationally. Her past consulting projects have included:

  • Tracking emerging technologies in critical hospital service lines for community and academic medical facilities.
  • Devising a multiyear strategic technology plan for three clinical service lines at two Australian hospitals.
  • New technology planning for imaging, endoscopy, and rehabilitation services at several U.S. hospitals.
  • Working with architects and hospital staff and coordinating new technology research with medical equipment planning for:
    • Renovation of existing operating suites into new minimally invasive and endovascular surgical suites at a major New York medical center.
    • Construction of new hospital facilities in Florida and Illinois, with a focus on imaging technologies across multiple clinical service lines (e.g., trauma, operating rooms, cardiovascular, neurology/neurosurgery).
    • Renovation of medical office suites and ambulatory/outpatient services for a large community hospital in Florida.
    • Redesign of operating rooms to accommodate cardiac surgery and cardiac interventional procedures and endovascular procedures.
  • Evaluating radiation oncology technology upgrade/replacement strategies for comprehensive cancer care delivery at a large university medical center in West Virginia and a community hospital in Pennsylvania.

Ms. Van Pelt has also written more than 25 articles on new technologies and trends in medical imaging for Radiology Today, a newsmagazine for radiology professionals, and recently published articles on horizon scanning and health technology assessment in Healthcare Purchasing News and America’s Health Insurance Plans Coverage. She has also recently published articles on surgical boom technologies and hybrid operating rooms in Healthcare Purchasing News and OR Manager. Ms. Van Pelt has delivered presentations at regional VHA meetings and national and regional AHRMM meetings, and served as an expert source on new medical technologies for local and national news stories.
