Overview

Hayes, Inc., a leader in health technology assessment, invited you to participate in a free webinar on the reality versus perception of medical imaging overuse and radiation overexposure on March 23, 2011. Ms. Jennifer Van Pelt, MA, Senior Hospital Consultant and Senior Research Analyst at Hayes, Inc. will be the featured presenter at this 1-hour live webinar.

The use of medical imaging has exploded over the past two decades as new medical imaging technologies have entered the market. Although medical imaging technologies are valuable diagnostic tools, overuse of medical imaging, in particular computed tomography, may expose patients to unnecessary radiation and contribute to soaring healthcare costs. Concerns about imaging overuse and radiation overexposure in hospitals have prompted physician, consumer, and government groups to demand better guidelines and regulation of medical imaging and radiation overexposure.

This webinar will introduce participants to the controversies surrounding imaging overuse and radiation overexposure, including a discussion of the reality versus perception of what is actually happening in clinical practice today. Strategies for curbing imaging overuse and radiation overexposure that participants can implement in their own facilities will also be presented.

This webinar is ideal for clinicians, such as primary care physicians and nurses, emergency physicians and nurses, radiologic technologists, and medical assistants, as well as case managers, directors of quality assurance, directors of operations, directors of risk management, and other hospital executives interested in learning more about how to curb imaging overuse and radiation overexposure.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe trends and new developments in the use of medical imaging
  • Identify the benefits, harms, and risks associated with common imaging examinations
  • Explain reasons for overuse of imaging technologies
  • Describe clinical areas that have a high potential for overuse
  • Differentiate between the reality versus perception of imaging overuse and radiation overexposure
  • Develop and utilize strategies for curbing imaging overuse and radiation overexposure
