Partial Government Shutdown Impacts FDA Operations

January 2, 2019

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that beginning on December 22, 2018, the agency is temporarily unable to accept any regulatory submissions for fiscal year (FY) 2019 that require a fee payment due to unresolved disputes over the U.S. federal budget.

Approximately 40% of FDA employees are furloughed until such time as a FY 2019 appropriation or Continuing Resolution for the FDA is enacted. During the partial shutdown, the FDA will continue work that is critical to public health and safety. The agency will continue to respond to emergencies, like the flu and foodborne illnesses, and it will continue recalls of any foods, drugs, and medical devices that pose a high risk to human health.

The FDA will continue to support activities funded by user fees previously paid by pharmaceutical and medical device companies.
